Listen More. Talk Less. Pfizer gets digital marketing to boomers right.

In talking about Pfizer’s new venture that takes it out of its usual use of TV spots in favor of a microsite named GetOld.com, Pfizer’s Corporate Affairs Chief, Sally Susman said: “We needed to step out a little bit into a new way of engaging people. Listening more and talking less.” (August 20, 2012 issue [...]

There Oughta Be a Law … Harry’s Law

In the words of NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, the TV series “Harry’s Law” was cancelled because the audience (mostly 55+ and up) was “too old.” For those of you who are “too old” like me, you know this show was a wonderfully irreverent presentation that featured veteran actress Kathy Bates. She played a once a highly-paid, top-level patent lawyer who burns out and is fired from that job only to discover a new lease on life as a criminal defense lawyer. Adn here’s a few choice words for NBC…

To Get Boomers Playing Your Tune, Try The Six C’s

To paraphrase the lyrics to “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” … “It was 65 years ago today that Boomers entered the world to play.” Well, as the leading edge Boomers approach (and even surpass) that life passage of a 65th birthday, playtime feels like a long time ago. And while lots of people today [...]

Forget the “Golden Years!” Baby Boomers Are Platinum Now and Have the Insurance to Prove It!

The latest insurance trend for leading edge Baby Boomers is “longevity insurance.” Who would have thought the day would come when we would need to have insurance because we are living too long? The concept involves giving an amount of money to an insurer when you are in your 60s and they in turn will [...]

A word to wise Boomer patients: “Know thyself!”

I recently stumbled across a controversial post on a presentation made on QuantiaMD. Entitled “Managing the Difficult Patient,” there is one segment of the presentation called “The Patient Who Knows Too Much” that is causing all the uproar. It disparages the patient who comes with copies in-hand of information gleaned on the Internet. It discusses [...]

How should health marketers view Baby Boomers as they turn 65 and older?

Whatever you want to call it – the age wave, the silver tsunami or the pig in the python – the impact of the Baby Boomers reaching 65 (and beyond) is both formidable and enticing. Formidable because of the size of the population…and because of the demands these Leading Edge Boomers will make on both the design of health care and use of it. Enticing also because of its size and because of its potential revenue for the marketers of both health care products and health insurance.

Don’t Forget … It’s All About Me and Nobody Else.

Although marketers should definitely view Leading Edge Boomers as a market with great potential, it is a market to be approached with thoughtfulness and not wild abandon. This is, after all, the “Me Generation.”

When Boomers Meet Medicare

When Kathleen Casey-Kirschling (born on 1/1/1946) stepped up to a computer to be the first Baby Boomer to enroll in Social Security, the first warning shot was fired that this would be a new age in connecting with people heading to Medicare. Her enrollment online was the sign of how differently marketers will need to address this market from those in the Eisenhower generation.

Holidays for Boomers – They’re Not Your Norman Rockwell Painting Anymore

As one of my colleagues bemoaned the fact that her leading edge Boomer parents were abandoning them for the holidays to go cruising, it reminded me that the holiday table certainly is looking very different than the one that Norman Rockwell portrayed in the 1940s.

First, Boomer grandparents may likely be on that cruise or skiing in Aspen rather than serving up the turkey. Over the river and through the woods to grandmother’s house may find an empty house when you get there. Or, the grandparents just may gather everyone up and take the whole family on the cruise with them. Intergenerational travel is one of the fastest growing segments of the travel industry.

The Eyes Have (Had) It!

Just last week a colleague of mine was told she has the beginnings of a cataract at the young age of 50. And to my surprise, my eye appointment revealed the same diagnosis for me – just a week later. No, not the same doctor, just two Boomers experiencing one of the very real effects of getting older. What it brought to mind is one of my greatest pet peeves…
