Boom! Look Who’s Turning 65

In the mid 1960s, the first of  77 million Baby Boomers graduated from High School.  They had no idea they were “Boomers,” or that they were a demographic phenomenon that would take the establishment by surprise as they crossed every major milestone in their journey toward Social Security and Medicare. In fact, Medicare didn’t exist [...]

To Get Boomers Playing Your Tune, Try The Six C’s

To paraphrase the lyrics to “Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” … “It was 65 years ago today that Boomers entered the world to play.” Well, as the leading edge Boomers approach (and even surpass) that life passage of a 65th birthday, playtime feels like a long time ago. And while lots of people today [...]

Who needs life insurance? My “unreal” lesson from real life.

A short while ago, I came across a disturbing statistic in a recent issue of Insurance Networking News: Almost half of Americans with household incomes between $50,000 and $250,000 don’t have life insurance. Zip. Zilch. Nada. This struck me as disturbing on a number of personal levels. First, as someone who specializes in selling insurance directly [...]

“Change is the only constant,” or is it only constant change?

FLASH! — Today’s world is changing so rapidly! Now, I know this doesn’t feel like news, or even a new phenomenon. Evolution is as fundamental as life itself. However, I cannot shake the feeling that we are on the cusp of some truly fundamental changes to our day-to-day lives … and how we as marketing [...]

Forget the “Golden Years!” Baby Boomers Are Platinum Now and Have the Insurance to Prove It!

The latest insurance trend for leading edge Baby Boomers is “longevity insurance.” Who would have thought the day would come when we would need to have insurance because we are living too long? The concept involves giving an amount of money to an insurer when you are in your 60s and they in turn will [...]

How will a Boomer Muse change the way you picture life “all grown up?”

These days marketers excel at spouting studies, facts and statistics on the Baby Boomer market. However, when it comes to the visceral decision of selecting images and photography to market to this segment we are sometimes still stuck in a time warp. For example, the word “senior” should never be used during a photo search [...]

How should health marketers view Baby Boomers as they turn 65 and older?

Whatever you want to call it – the age wave, the silver tsunami or the pig in the python – the impact of the Baby Boomers reaching 65 (and beyond) is both formidable and enticing. Formidable because of the size of the population…and because of the demands these Leading Edge Boomers will make on both the design of health care and use of it. Enticing also because of its size and because of its potential revenue for the marketers of both health care products and health insurance.

When Boomers Meet Medicare

When Kathleen Casey-Kirschling (born on 1/1/1946) stepped up to a computer to be the first Baby Boomer to enroll in Social Security, the first warning shot was fired that this would be a new age in connecting with people heading to Medicare. Her enrollment online was the sign of how differently marketers will need to address this market from those in the Eisenhower generation.

Leading-Edge Boomers – an unlikely part of the sandwich generation – supersized

Leading-Edge Boomers approaching Medicare are finding themselves to be an unlikely part of the sandwich generation – supersized. The traditional sandwich family consists of children, parents, and their parents. Today, thanks to our healthcare system, many Boomers are finding that they are looking after their parents, helping their kids and also providing help for their grandkids.
